Amazing Grand Gulch. What an amazing trip. I have never seen Indian ruins and these were simply marvelous. We stayed four days and had a great time. I have to admit that sometimes I think we are kind of crazy to go backpacking with a baby. But the truth is, a baby is always high maintenance no matter where you are. Here are some pics of the trip. I made Riv a little sleeping bag and I was so surprised how well she slept. I love the picture of her taking a nap under the cottonwood trees. She did so great. Only one tantrum and we just took a break and pumped some water while she screamed like a banshee. Sorry to our fellow campers who were on hot pursuit of the screaming bobcat only to discover a 10 month old baby. She does sound remarkably like a member of the cat family. And sorry to Alex for singing Christmas songs the whole way. What, those are the only songs I know the words too. But once he did slip and sing...."of Christmases long long ago...." Ha ha.

A few things you should know

There are a few things you should know.

Some people think that because I make things all the time I would be a good person to invite to an FHE group where you make six or seven copies of the same beautifully crafted FHE lesson each month and then swap them with six or seven other people and do it every month for a long time and then you have so many beautifully crafted FHE lessons. But what some people don't know is that I'm not a good person to invite to do this. And maybe those people found out that I'm not a good person to invite to do this when the first month I didn't even do it and then the second month everyone hands out their laminated, felt board, hand colored lessons and then I hand them a piece of paper that says.... "Make a Family Flag"

You should also know that instead of making FHE lessons I have been working hard on a new show that I'm super excited about. I'm giving myself a year to complete it and, no I don't know where it's going to be. But it's coming and I'm loving it.

I go to the zoo every week. Lately I am really into taking pictures of the small animals juxtapose their fabricated backgrounds. I love it. It's like the animals went to get their portraits taken at kiddie kandids or somewhere. They become such super loaded images, so interesting but It kind of kills me too. I'm obsessed with animals if you didn't know. I'm also getting into bird watching.

And, River is learning to walk. Alex is really good at inventing ways in which you don't have to bend over to help out.

This Sunday we are blessing River in Alex's parents ward up in Park City. My whole family will be in town and I'm so excited. I've spent the last little while getting her dress ready and I think it turned out super cute. I'll post pictures of her in it later.

River's first camping trip

We spent the fourth of July up in the uinta mountains. This was River's first camping trip and she did amazing. We went on about a 6 hour hike and she just looked around and then would fall asleep then wake up and look around again. She also slept so well. Better than she does at home. Scott and Mardi planned everything and it was the best trip ever. Super relaxing. We even took the canoe out on one of the lakes. It was so beautiful.

This is going to be a complaining blog entry. Abbi is in the hospital and I can't stand it. I want to be there with her. I hate reading on her blog that she has to blink to respond. She has Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome caused from pneumonia. Man I love that girl. Please pray for her.

Here's my problem. Everyday I want to start a new project. I am totally out of control. I started a mobile about 3 months ago (not finished), I started making a dress about 2 months ago (not finished), I started a quilt that for some reason I thought I needed to stitch by hand (not finished). Why do I do this to myself? The new rule is I CANNOT start another project until these things are done. The sad thing is the mobile and dress are probably only a few hours from being completed but do you think that makes me want to finish them? The other sad thing is I haven't been working on any real artwork just stupid crafts that my baby will barf on. Here's my other problem. I am completely afraid of anything getting dingy. If it looks at all dingy I immediately try to dye it. This rarely works. It almost always turns into a tye dyed disaster. so then what do I do. I think oh I'll just stitch something over the ugly parts. But then what do I do, I think oh now the piece seems unbalanced, I better stitch all over to balance things out. Then what do I do? Then I step back and look at whatever thing I've made and think oh that looks like a piece of stinkin crap and then I throw it in the closet and don't finish it but I know I'll probably work on it later because I can't stop thinking about how it used to look cute before I washed it with the darks and it became dingy and now it looks like a freakin clown came to town and got into my stuff and barfed all over it. So today I'm going to work on the quilt.

Night-minds

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The MSC Visual Arts Committee at Texas A&M University will host the exhibition Night-minds by Kathryn Knudsen beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the J. Wayne Stark Galleries. The exhibition features sixteen mixed medium pieces on everything from canvas and paper to felt and fabric. In conjunction with the exhibition, VAC will host a gallery talk on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The Salt Lake native draws inspiration from artists, such as Yoshimoto Nara and Shazia Sikander, whose forms and colors are associated with the feminine and childish. The soft round lines and delicate pastels of these artists has become a legitimate means of analyzing the violently global.

Knudsen’s art is an expression of her experiences with sexualized abuse and masculine avant-garde. She articulates these encounters in an attempt to comprehend the male authority in today’s world. Through this psychological endeavor, Knudsen comes to terms with her past and the history of male authority over the cutting edge in art.

“My art is created in moments of impulsive collage--a reorganization, a cutting up, a mixing, a pastiche that will call to mind the ‘automatic’ imaging of surrealist art, but continually soften these aesthetic combinations, shaping the products of this mental process into my own sense of feminine, individual strength,” said Knudsen.

Night-minds by Kathryn Knudsen will be on display until February 29. The MSC Visual Arts Committee organizes five exhibitions per year in the Center Gallery at the J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries. The mission of the MSC Visual Arts Committee is to provide the students of Texas A&M University opportunities to connect the visual arts with their personal lives through art exhibitions (including student work), gallery programs, artist residencies, and travel.

I was just sitting here on the computer and I just heard the biggest fart. It sounded like it was right behind me. Yes, I turned around. No one was there. I think this is very weird. I guess it could have come from upstairs. The new people are pretty loud. But would I really hear their farts? I can' believe it. More secret gardening success

My secret garden did so good. I've had tons of zuccini and now my beets are finally big enough to harvest. Yipee!!!! I think I'll be getting some brussell sprouts later in the fall. No one has pulled them out yet and they seems to be doing quite well. Man I'm such a good gardener.

I love beets. But Amy I don't love love enough to make borsch.

So when I was in California my sister in law Brooke told me that while she was browsing blogs she saw this picture of a painting that looked like one of mine. She inquired about the painting and received the response that her cousin from Idaho had painted it and isn't she amazing? Well I checked out the blog and I have a hard time believing we both came up with such similar compositions. I don't know maybe it's me but I'm not buying it. I'd like to hear others opinions.

I just got home from canning tomatoes with Ann Dee. I don't think I will do that again.

Since I've been home I've done the following...

1. Opened the door.
2. knocked over my bike.
3. Listened to a loud breaking glass sound.
4. Walked around the corner.
5. Realized my bike knock Alex's cool piece of vintage glass onto the floor.
6. Wished it had been the ceramic pot that was into front of the cool piece of vintage glass.
7. Looked at the ground and thought... I really don't want to clean that up.
8. Noticed a box of doughnuts on the counter.
9. Thought about how those doughnuts were probably left over from Alex's work lunch.
10. Ate half of a doughnut.
11. Thought about how I already knew they were going to be sick and stale.
12. Looked at the glass again.
13. Got the vacuum.
14. Picked up the big pieces and thought about how I have to save them because if we tumble them they will probably look cool.
15. Thought about how we have tons of tumbled glass that does look cool, but we don't do anything with.
16. Put the big pieces in the cupboard with the other tumbling stuff.
17. Threw some small pieces away.
18. Vacuumed up the really small pieces.
19. Ate half of the other half of the doughnut.
20. Thought about how it was still sick and still stale.
21. Thought " Why the crap do I even eat it if I don't like it"
22. Thought about Katy. And how she would say... "intuitive eating".
23. Decided to leave the vacuum out until tomorrow.
24. Wrote this blog.

The Windrivers Wyoming

Here are some pictures from our Windrivers trip. Alex has been wanting to take me here for a very long time and we finally did it. We had such a blast. I've never seen such a beautiful place. We hiked about 45 miles and I was very proud of myself. Alex's mom and dad came with us and I was so glad to have Mardi there with me. She is such an amazing woman. I don't know many 55 year olds that could have handled it. She was amazing and never complained once. She is quite the inspiration. I hope when I am 55 I will be as tough as her. During our second day we got stuck in a hail storm with 1/2 inch hail pounding down on us for about an hour and a half. I got brusies the hail was so big. I caught eight fish and Scott and Alex cooked them on the beach. I've never tasted such delicious fish. The mosquitoes were bad and I look like I have the chicken pocks. But even with the bruises and the bites it was a wonderful experience. I'm so glad I married a man that inspires me to explore things that I know if I married anyone else I never would have seen.

So this morning I go out to water the secret garden and what do I find? This lovely little piece of squash. I can't tell you how rewarding this was. Yippee!!! 1. One time I walked in the family room and Alex was watching Little House on the Prairie. He thinks I made this story up, but I know it's true. I tell him it's nothing to be ashamed of.
2. Alex says Sinead O'Connor songs make him think of Lagoon.
3. He doesn't like cake. Weird.

4. He whistles when he is working really hard at something.
5. One time Alex had a dream about organizing laundry.
6. When Alex gets sad he likes to buy nerd ropes.

Just got back from some great trips. I spent the last week in Seattle visiting my sis and her fam. Alex was on a river trip with his company so I decided to take a trip myself. I forgot a camera, but you can see some pictures on my sister Amy's blog. Just click the tanners link to the right. It was so much fun. I love those guys.

The week before that Alex and I went with some family and friends down to Moab. We camped near elephant hill. It was the most beautiful place. Every flower was in bloom. I've never seen Moab so green.

We found this cave with stack up carins. There must have been a thousand of them. It was so amazing. I wish I could have gotten a better photo.

There were so many flowers in bloom but the Yucca is my favorite.

So I was going about my normal routine. When.... Someone stold my parsely. I knew secret gardening would come with risks, but I can't bare it. Did they think it was a weed? Even so, the only person weeding that area was me. Why? Why? Just yesterday I was day dreaming about how for years the parsely would flurish and I could come back and harvests year after beautiful year. The parsely was doing the best of all. So, the other night I couldn't sleep at all. Why couldn't I sleep you ask? Because I was lying there thinking about what I would do if I was attacked by a cougar. Literally sleepless. I mean what am I going to do? Say I'm riding my bike along a beautiful mountain road when suddenly a big cat launches onto my neck. Is that it? Is life over? There must be something I can do. I stewed over this for hours. Maybe I coud reach back and gouge out his eye. Maybe I could try and get my hand down his throat and grab his uvula. Maybe I could grab his ears and flip myself around onto his back and then kicked his feet under him and pin him onto the floor. Expect then what do I do once I've pinned him? I keep saying him, but maybe it's a girl cougar and she is mad because she thinks I am trying to hurt her cubs. But I'm not, I'm just on a bike ride. I know when you see a cougar and you think they might attack you that you should scream and be really loud and not run away because then they will think you are prey and want to catch you, but if you just yell really loud they will get scared and run away. I always think that if I sang that song "And I would walk 5,000 miles, and I would walk 5,000 more, just to be the man to walk 5,000 miles to.... something.... something at your door....da da da.....da da da. I think if I sang that really loud, a cougar would hate that.

About once a month Alex and I like to go and make earth art. This is one of my favorite pieces. We were at Devil's Kitchen in southern Utah. We crushed up rocks to make the powder, then used plastic bags with holes in them to draw the circles. I love doing earth art. It is so theraputic and satisfying.

Lately I've been into some sneaky business. I really feel sad about not having a garden. Well not so sad. But sad enough that I have been secretly planting seeds around the neighborhood. Just small spots of land that other people are clearly not using. Alex thinks this is extremely funny. He says it's like I'm a secret vandal only I'm not vandalizing I'm just gardening. AnnDee thinks it's a little crazy and that I am crazy. But what I really want a garden.
